Free Workshop: The Transformative Power of Role-play in Language and Culture Classes March 9, 2020

Dr. Sandra Sousa will discuss Mark Carnes’ Minds on Fire: How Role-Immersion Games Transform College as a path to improve the teaching of culture and languages classes, based on her recent findings by implementing reacting to the past (RTTP) role-play in her languages and culture classes. It is also her intention to show how games based on role-play can have a significant impact on the way students learn and how it makes the classroom an engaging and mind-challenging environment for every student. A final aspect of her presentation involves discussion of the effectiveness of implementing role-play as a new teaching method aimed at facilitating student success.

Dr. Sousa will share the new pedagogical insights to teach languages, presenting the results of introducing role-play into her classrooms, and how this methodology can also contribute to a group discussion of how learning can be a transformative experience for students and instructors alike.

This presentation/workshop is designed for all the languages, focusing on a new pedagogical insight with special focus on reflection on the role of languages teachers as leaders in spreading, and teaching a culture, and a language.

To facilitate attendance of educators outside of UWM’s campus, ZOOM Meeting video conference will be an option available. In order to offer the possibility for different educators to attend the workshop, there will be two different sessions at UW-Milwaukee, Curtin Hall room B84 on March 9, 2020.
