17 years ago, our founders Paul Roebber and Mike Westendorf, set forth on a mission to bring positive value to UWM Atmospheric Science students, the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee, our supporting partners, and the community through applied experience in a weather forecast setting. Now, we have closed with that legacy and mission still intact, and with over 100 students & alumni behind us. We are immensely grateful for the support from all these groups over the years, for the lessons learned, and the lives impacted.

In his many years working with Atmospheric Science students, Dr. Paul Roebber saw the need for students to have not only a strong education in meteorology, but the need for meaningful hands-on experience. The challenge? Most weather internships are not paid and are limited in their hands-on application, leaving students graduating with a degree, but little experience to compete for jobs coming out of college.
Innovative Weather, a partnership between the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and professions in Wisconsin and beyond, was the result of his concern. Internships at Innovative Weather take students learning the theory and application in the classroom and train them to work in a professional 24/7 forecast operation that prepares forecast risk assessments and communications for real-world clients. Over the years, Innovative weather has served nearly 100 students, placing many of them in the very competitive field of professional meteorology. Our alumni network spans through private companies, research institutions, education, the National Weather Service, and more.
