FactoryTalk Optix Hackathon Sponsored by Rockwell Automation

September 12–October 1, 2025 • Connected Systems Institute at UW-Milwaukee

Overview

Redesign how humans run industrial systems. In this fast-paced challenge, you’ll convert and elevate existing PanelView 5000 HMI screens into FactoryTalk Optix for CSI’s manufacturing test bed. You’ll design a working multi-screen Optix experience, pitch it live, and compete for recognition, prize money, and the opportunity to work alongside Rockwell engineers to integrate your team’s solution into CSI’s HMIs.

The full challenge will be revealed on Friday, September 12, at 2:00 PM, at the launch event in CSI’s classroom, GML E190.

  • Cash prizes offered for best solutions and presentations!
  • Top team gets to work alongside Rockwell engineers to install technology upgrade at CSI!

Who can Join?

Any UWM student can join. Engineering, data, computer science, and design students are encouraged. Teams should consist of 3 to 5 members.

No prior FactoryTalk Optix experience needed. Workshops and coaching are provided by Rockwell Automation.

Why Participate?

  • Build real HMI/SCADA skills with FactoryTalk Optix on a live test environment.
  • Practice modern UI/UX for industrial ops: role-aware views, high-performance visuals, object-oriented design.
  • Get mentored and coached by Rockwell Automation engineers.
  • Winners advance to work alongside the Rockwell team to update CSI’s HMI screens.

Important Dates

  • Sept 12 — Optix Info Session, 2:00–4:00 PM (kickoff)
  • Sept 19 — UI/UX Info Session, 10:00–11:00 AM
  • Sept 29 — Optix files due by 11:59 PM
  • Oct 1 — Live presentations & awards, 3:00–5:00 PM
  • Late October/November — Winners: technology upgrade with Rockwell team

Form your team and register today! There is not cost to participate in the hackathon. Teams should have between 3-5 members. All participants must been currently enrolled UWM students.
