Prospective minors are advised strongly to be competent in written and oral language skills prior to seeking admission to the program.

The Department communicates with students principally through email. Minors are required to check their UWM email routinely. Graduation with a minor requires a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 in all communication courses attempted, including transfer work. All courses in the major or minor, with the exception of COMMUN 298, must be taken for graded credit.

Communication Minor

A minor in communication consists of at least 18 credits in communication courses, including Commun 101, 103, 105, and 9 credits numbered 300 or above (must be taken in residence at UWM).

To declare a minor in Communication, simply complete the following steps:

  1. Click on the Declaration of Minor Form button below. (Link leaves site.)
  2. Fill out the Declaration of Minor Form.
  3. Submit the Declaration of Minor Form.

What happens next?

  • An undergraduate faculty advisor will receive your submitted request to declare communication as a minor and will review your unofficial transcript.
  • Within approximately 5-7 days, you will receive a detailed email from the communication faculty advisor with your assessment.
  • Your request to declare communication as a minor will be approved (unless otherwise stated) and filed as part of your student record.
  • You have officially declared sociology as a minor, WELCOME to the communication department!
