Research Interests

Her research focuses on interpersonal and family communication, with particular interests in spousal and family relationships, mental health and well-being, work-life balance, and the experiences of married graduate and doctoral students. She uses qualitative and mixed-methods approaches to examine how communication processes and technologies shape relational well-being and academic experiences. Her broader research interests include health communication, computer-mediated communication, gender and reproductive health, and communication among marginalized populations.

Related Activities

Her related activities include research and conference presentations in interpersonal and family communication, scholarly reviewing for NCA, CSCA, and the Iowa Journal of Communication, and editorial service with the Iowa Journal of Communication. She also engages in graduate student leadership and professional service through CSCA and serves as the PhD Student Representative to the Graduate Advisory Committee (GAC) through the Communication Graduate Student Council (CGSC).

Biographical Sketch

Aklima Begum is a PhD student in Communication and a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee (UWM). She is also an Assistant Professor of English at Shaikh Burhanuddin Post Graduate College in Bangladesh (on study leave). With more than 13 years of teaching experience in higher education, her academic background bridges English studies and communication. Her research focuses on interpersonal and family communication, particularly spousal and family relationships, mental health and well-being, work-life balance, and the experiences of married graduate and doctoral students. Her broader scholarly interests include health and computer-mediated communication, gender, and communication among marginalized populations.
