A new group of students enters the program every January. The program accepts about 10-15 students per year. This is a combined number for graduate and undergraduate students. We will accept applications from September 15 through November 3. There are a limited number of spots available. Early applications are strongly recommended.
Pre-requisite classes for undergraduate applicants include Bus Adm 301 (Intermediate Accounting) and 451 (Investment Finance). Pre-requisite courses for graduate applicants are Bus Adm 721 (Financial Accounting Theory) and Bus Adm 771 (Investments). Equivalent courses from other universities may be acceptable for students who transfer to UWM. Undergraduate students are encouraged to enroll in 450 (Intermediate Finance) with Professor Spellman.
On a case by case basis, a student may be allowed to enroll in Bus Adm 552 (Investment Practice I), the first investment practice course in the IMCP, without 301/721 (or equivalent if transferred); however, the student will not be admitted into the IMCP without successful completion of the course. It is very rare that a student would be admitted without 451/771 (or equivalent if transferred).
Meeting the pre-requisites improves the student’s candidacy for the IMCP. The admissions committee will evaluate grades in the above-noted classes, cumulative GPA, and other course grades as part of the admissions decisions process.
In addition to the application (described above), candidates are required to interview for positions in the program. The admissions committee includes Dawn Koerten (Director of Academic Affairs, ex officio member from the Dean’s office), Dr. Dick Marcus, Dr. Mike McBain, and Dr. Kevin Spellman. Dr. Derann Hsu may also participate. As part of the interview process, students will write an impromptu essay on an investment-related or another topic.
The program is a very rigorous training ground for students who are seeking to become investment professionals. Because of the program’s rigor, we strongly discourage students from working more than 10 to 15 hours per week. To excel in the program, it is important for students to be able to devote as much time as possible to learning and contributing to their team of fellow student-investors. Thus, except for investment-related positions, it is preferable for students to not work during the fall and spring semesters.
