Satisfies 0-3 Credits
Internships provide practical training and experience for students. Working within a firm or organization allows students to acquire and apply knowledge through direct experience related to business. If a student is not eligible for an academic or professional internship course in their field of study, there is an alternative business internship course.
- Business Internships: May be part-time or full-time. May be paid or unpaid positions. Requires a minimum of 60-120 hours. Credits earned through this internship can be applied to business or general electives.
Eligibility
Students who have instructor approval and have completed the course prerequisites are eligible to enroll in an internship. Course prerequisites are stated below and are enforced.
Business Internships:
- BUS ADM 208: Consent of Instructor
Policies
- Students completing the internship must have an on-site supervisor during the internship.
- The duties or responsibilities called for by the internship:
- Must be related to business and offer an opportunity to connect the internship to a business field.
- Must meet minimum number of hours depending on the credits requested.
- 1 credit: at least 60 internship hours and 35 hours on class related activities.
- 2 credits: at least 90 internship hours and 35 hours on class related activities
- 3 credits: at least 120 internship hours and 35 hours on class related activities.
- Student enrolling for “0” credits must have approval from the course instructor. Rare Occasions.
- Include learned skills that are transferable to other settings.
- Credit for an internship will be granted only when the internship is completed. Students must be registered for and complete the internship during the semester in which they receive academic credit.
- Bus Adm 208 may only be taken once.
- Students cannot earn credits for Bus Adm 208 if they have earned 300-level or 400-level internship credits for the internship already.
How to Find Internships
- Search for open positions on Handshake, LinkedIn, Indeed, or by attending the career fair. If new to Handshake, you must activate your account first.
- The Career Services Center in Lubar N203 can help find positions. They can also provide feedback on your resume, cover letter, and interviewing skills. Schedule an appointment via Handshake or reach out to them by email (get-experience@uwm.edu) or by phone (414-229-5445).
How to Register
- Submit your Internship for Credit application through Handshake – Please note, responses cannot be saved and completed later. Gather the required information in advance of filling out the application.
- Watch this detailed video on how to submit the application as an “experience” in Handshake
- In Handshake, click on “Career Center”
- Click on “Experiences,”
- Then click on “Submit an Experience”
- Select the “Lubar Internship for Credits – Bus Adm 208” experience template
- Fill out the required information.
- After submitting the experience, attach a document for the position description if needed.
- Monitor the approval process in Handshake:
- Career services will review the submission for approval.
- Course instructor (Juli Pickering, jlpicker@uwm.edu) will review for approval and schedule meeting to complete the “Registration Change Form.”
