Wisconsin Chapter of AIA began campaigning for the creation of a school of architecture.
1966
UWM School of Architecture (SAR) was established with a four-year bachelor’s degree and two-year master’s degree.
1968
John Wade appointed as inaugural dean of the School of Architecture.
1969
UW Board of Regents approved final curriculum and classes began at the Extension Civic Center Campus.
1969
American Institute of Architecture Students chapter was formed and published a newsletter called The Perspective. Later published as The Helvetica Medium and The Third Coast Review.
1972
SAR moves from the Civic Center Campus to Holton Hall on the Kenwood Campus.
1972
SAR faculty organize Beginnings, the first time design educators come together to discuss introductory design education. This evolves into the National Conference on the Beginning Design Student (NCBDS).
1973
SAR moves into Englemann Hall.
1974
UW Board of Regents approved establishing the Department of Urban Planning, and the school changed to the School of Architecture and Urban Planning (SARUP).
1974
NAAB Initial Accreditation of Architecture Program.
1975
Anthony Catanese appointed dean of SARUP.
1979
SARUP recognized as UW Center of Excellence by Wisconsin Legislature.
1982
Doctoral program (PhD) in Architecture established.
1983
Carl Patton appointed dean of SARUP.
1983
Third Coast Design Cooperative, later Third Coast Design Centre, Inc. formed.
1988
SARUP redesignated by Board of Regents as UW Center of Excellence.
1990
Robert Greenstreet appointed dean of SARUP.
1992
GIS Certificate established.
1994
SARUP moves to its current home, a ground up building dedicated entirely to architecture and planning designed by Holabird & Root in collaboration with Eppstein Uhen.
1995
Historic Preservation Institute established.
2000
Campus Design Solutions, now Community Design Solutions, established.
2005
Marcus Prize established.
2006
Urban Edge Award established.
2008
SUPERjury, a year-end review and celebration of student work, established.
2010
Institute for Ecological Design established from the former Johnson Controls Institute.
2013
Department of Architecture receives approval to offer an M.S. in Architecture.
2018
SAMPLE Student Journal established.
2020
Third Coast Design Centre closes due to pandemic. A newly expanded Rapid Prototyping Lab, now called the Fabrication Lab, opens with a school store.
2021
SARUP receives approval to offer a Master of Urban Design (MUD).
2023
SARUP joins the newly established College of the Arts and Architecture, bringing together the School of Architecture & Urban Planning and Peck School of the Arts.
2023
Department of Architecture receives approval to offer a new five-year BArch degree.
2024
Center for Equity Practice and Planning Justice established.
2025
Winifred E. Newman appointed inaugural dean of the College of the Arts and Architecture.
