At UWM, we are working to enhance education and discovery through the use of artificial intelligence (AI). This includes work that supports teaching and learning, connections with industry through centers and institutes, and research across many disciplines.

Connected Systems Institute (CSI)

The UWM Connected Systems Institute is a partnership with Microsoft, Rockwell Automation and other supporters to foster the development of advanced manufacturing. CSI is also the new home for the latest Microsoft AI Co-Innovation Lab. It is part of Microsoft’s $3.3 billion investment in southeast Wisconsin, and it will be Microsoft’s first manufacturing-focused AI Co-Innovation Lab. The lab will strengthen UWM’s education and research mission while connecting Wisconsin manufacturers and other companies with Microsoft’s artificial intelligence experts and developers.

Northwestern Mutual Data Science Institute (NMDSI)

The Northwestern Mutual Data Science Institute (NMDSI) is a partnership among UWM, Northwestern Mutual and Marquette University. The groundbreaking partnership was created in 2018 to develop a technology ecosystem and advance southeastern Wisconsin as a national hub for technology, research, business and talent development, while creating an organic pipeline of tech talent in the area.

NMDSI focuses on research, talent and community. The institute provides support for students, researchers and curriculum development that helps solve important business and community challenges by harnessing the power of data for research and scientific discovery, prepares the next generation of data science professionals to advance the region, and partners with area nonprofit organizations to address issues facing some of our most vulnerable populations.

Research

UWM researchers have a long history of developing and using machine learning, neural networks, data science and other artificial intelligence tools in their work. UWM’s Office of Research provides information on the range of resources for researchers.

Digital Accessibility
