The U.S. Department of State supports the Critical Languages Scholarship (CLS) program, which provides immersive summer study abroad programs of 7-10 weeks for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to study languages deemed to have particular strategic importance to the U.S. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals enrolled in a degree-granting program.
The UWM Grad School will hold an information session for students interested in learning more about the application process on Tuesday, September 22, from 1:00-2:00pm in Mitchell 245. Register for the info session here.
Designated critical languages taught at UWM:
Arabic (applicants must have at least one year of prior study)
Chinese (applicants must have at least one year of prior study)
Japanese (applicants must have at least two years of prior study)
Korean (applicants must have at least one year of prior study)
Portuguese (applicants are not required to have any prior study)
Russian (applicants must have at least one year of prior study)
Other critical languages:
Hindi (applicants are not required to have any prior study)
Persian (applicants are not required to have any prior study)
Swahili (applicants are not required to have any prior study)
