German Movie Night: Beyond the Blue Border

Please join us for a very special movie night with a film about friendship, trust, and risking one’s life for freedom.
It is the summer of 1989 in East Germany (GDR), only months before the Fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War: Andreas has had enough of his violent father and his constant clashes with the political authorities. His best friend Hanna is training to become an olympic swimmer, but she, too, feels more and more trapped within a sports machinery that is under complete control by the state. The teenagers decide to flee to West Germany by swimming 30 miles across the Baltic Sea. The film takes a tender look at their friendship, their lives in the GDR, and their harrowing journey to freedom.
The film will be shown in German with English subtitles. Prof. May-Chu (UWM German Program) will give a brief introduction to the historical context and the true stories that have inspired this film.
