Welcome to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee! As a fellow international student, I’m here to share my experiences and tips to help you navigate your exciting journey at UWM. Stepping into a new academic and cultural environment can be overwhelming, but trust me, this experience will be worth it.

My First Days at UWM

When I first arrived in Milwaukee, I was filled with a mix of excitement and nervousness. I’ll admit that the winters were a big shock, but the warmth of the UWM community quickly made me feel at home. From attending orientation to discovering the vibrant campus life, I realized that I wasn’t alone – there were hundreds of other international students starting their journeys alongside me.

Plan for your Arrival

  • Get your I-20, visa, and all documents ready before traveling. If you need help, International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) is there for you.
  • Winter in Milwaukee can be chilly, so bring a warm coat, gloves, and boots. Summers, on the other hand, are perfect for exploring!

Settling in at UWM

  • Take time to explore the campus – it has everything you need, and do not miss the campus tour!!
  • For housing, check out on-campus and off-campus options on UWM website, and plan early to secure your spot!

Academic Life

  • Professors at UWM are approachable and happy to help, so don’t hesitate to ask questions or visit during office hours.
  • Use resources like the Writing Center, Student Success Center, and libraries – they are here to support you.

Health and Wellness

  • The Student Health and Wellness Center (SHAW) is a vital resource for all students, offering medical care, mental health counseling, and wellness programs. Whether you need routine check-ups or support during challenging times, SHAW is there for you.
  • Adjusting to a new environment can be stressful. Take care of yourself – eat well, rest, and reach out if you need support adjusting.

Life in Milwaukee

  • Milwaukee is famous for its rich arts scene, diverse culinary offerings, and lively festivals. Walk along the beautiful Milwaukee Riverwalk or explore the renowned Milwaukee Art Museum.
  • As a UWM student, you’ll have access to a U-PASS for the Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS), making it easy to explore the city.

Career Opportunities and On-Campus Jobs

  • UWM provides access to Handshake, a platform for finding jobs and internships. It’s an excellent way to connect with employers and explore career opportunities. On-campus jobs are also available, offering flexibility and valuable experience while you study.

A Personal Note

Being an international student at UWM has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I’ve grown academically and personally, made friends, and found a second home in Milwaukee. Remember, you’re not alone in this journey. Reach out to fellow students, faculty, and the UWM community – we are all here to support you.

Welcome to the Panther family! You’re about to begin an unforgettable adventure, so make the most of every moment!
