Spring Break, not Spring Broke

Whether you are traveling or planning to stay in the Milwaukee area for spring break, you might be feeling the financial pressure of having fun while on break from classes. I’m here to tell you that is normal. However, try not to let financial constraints dampen your fun! Amazing experiences are within reach without emptying your bank account. It’s all about getting creative and prioritizing what really makes you happy so that you can come back after the break feeling ready to finish out the semester.

If you are already planning a trip via plane, train, or automobile:

  • While it may be tempting to go on a shopping spree to get brand-new outfits for your vacation, try to shop second-hand for clothes and accessories to fit your vibe. Thrifting offers budget- and eco-friendly options for the style you want to create for your trip.
  • Prioritize experiences, not things. Instead of expensive souvenirs, focus on creating memories while you are out of town. Many spring break destinations offer free or low-cost activities, like spending your days at the beach, hiking local trails, or exploring free museums and parks. Try to plan some of your days around free activities rather than pricey shopping and dining/drinking endeavors.
  • Use your student status to your advantage and ask for student discounts! You’d be surprised by the amenities, restaurants, and attractions that offer savings for students. Make sure to pack your student ID to have it on hand when asking for discounts.

If you are planning to spend your spring break in the Milwaukee area:

  • Transform your home into a relaxation zone. Plan spa days with DIY face masks, movie marathons with snacks, or even catch up on sleep. Prioritize activities that recharge you mentally… You may be in Wisconsin, but your brain can still get the vacation that it deserves!
  • When I have extra time but little spending money, I like to gather friends for a game night. Create a scoreboard or a mini-tournament for board games, video games, and card games to add a level of competition to the night. Ask others to bring their favorite games so that you don’t have to buy any new ones, and so you can have a variety of options.
  • Try to look for activities around Milwaukee that are little to no cost that you normally don’t have time for. Take a ride on The Hop to the Third Ward for a day of window shopping, go on a discount day at a local Museum, or, if the weather allows, try to go outside for a hike in a nearby nature area!

No matter where you plan on spending your spring break, don’t let the stress of finances be an issue while you’re supposed to be relaxing. After all, it’s called Spring Break; not Spring Broke.
