How To Make Home Away From Home

Fall break is coming up, and that can mean many things, relief from the homework overload, a chance to reset before finals, or the comfort of going home. But sometimes, unexpected things come up, or not everyone is able to go home for a break.

It’s normal to feel disconnected, uncomfortable, or even frustrated if you’re not able to go home for the fall break. Whatever the reason, spending this time by yourself can also be a chance to recharge and enjoy a quiet pause before finals begin. If you’re feeling a bit lonely or simply want to make the most of your time away from home, here are a few things you can do over break.

Virtual Quality Time

  • Many of your friends or family members are just a call away. You can utilize your technology features to make phone calls and stay connected with your loved ones over break. It can be simple as making food at the same time, watching a movie and Face Timing, or even playing online games together.

The Heart of Giving

  • If giving back brings you joy, volunteering locally is a meaningful way to celebrate the Month of Giving. Many organizations support those in need, especially during the holidays. At UWM, SET offers a variety of volunteer and community service opportunities in the Milwaukee area.
  • If there are no volunteer opportunities available, consider donating to shelters or food pantries, or creating holiday cards for the military and families in hospitals or shelters.

Practice Self-Care

  • This upcoming fall break is a great chance to wind down, de-stress, and get in tune with yourself. You may think about that one series you’ve been meaning to binge watch, or that new hobby you wanted to try out! Take this time to get in touch with yourself and reconnect with the things that make you happy!

There are many ways to seek comfort away from home. No matter how you’re spending your break, use this time to reflect and cherish the time you’re able to dedicate to yourself. You deserve it after a long semester of hard work. If you find yourself struggling to feel okay during this break, SHAW has mental health resources available for you whenever you need it!

You’ve made it through a long semester! You deserve peace and comfort wherever that may be.
