The end of the semester is quickly approaching, which means finals season is too. Your stress levels might be increasing and it’s important to take care of yourself so you can do your best and feel your best. Here are some tips to help you get through that final stretch of the semester without burning out:
Make a plan
- Create a to-do list for everything you need to get done and prioritize your most pressing tasks.
- Allow enough time to finish all your projects, papers, and studying so you’re not rushing at the last minute.
- If you find it to be helpful, try setting a timer for each of your tasks to help keep you on track.
Nourish your body
- Plan ahead for when you’re able to take snack or meal breaks while studying.
- Stay hydrated!
- Try to eat foods that will nourish your body, your mind, and keep you full and fueled while doing your work.
- Pay attention to the hours that your food resources are open (stores, dining halls, food pantries, etc.) to make sure that you give yourself time to get food.
Prioritize sleep
- Sleep is crucial for processing information. Being able to fall into REM sleep will help your brain properly store all the information you’ve learned.
- Avoid drinking caffeine in the afternoon and evening to help you sleep better.
- Set boundaries for when and where you study. Try not to study in your bed as it can lead to your brain associating your bed with work as opposed to sleep.
- Try to avoid studying and using screens too late at night.
Take breaks
- Take meaningful breaks that will help you recharge. Be careful not to take breaks that lead to procrastination.
- Use your break time to move your body or practice mindfulness. This could look like going for a walk, stretching, practicing breathing techniques, or doing a guided meditation.
- Give yourself a break from social media or your phone in general to help yourself reset.
