Dr. Cary Gabriel Costello is a sociology professor who also directs the LGBTQ+ Studies Program at UWM. Dr. Costello studies sex, gender, and sexuality in an intersectional context. He also studies how identities such as race, class and gender are embodied, how group identities are formed in contexts such as social media, and how marginalized groups are regulated by institutions such as medicine and law. Dr. Costello has special expertise on intersexuality, and on issues facing people who are transgender, nonbinary, and/or gender-nonconforming. Dr. Costello has extensive experience speaking to both academic and popular audiences. His credentials include a BA in Psychology (Yale), a JD (Harvard), and an MA and PhD in Sociology (UC-Berkeley).
