Charter:
A1.35 Affirmative Action in Faculty Employment Committee
- Membership. Seven members as follows: four Faculty members elected; one member of the University Committee appointed by the University Committee; and ex-officio, the Provost and the Director of the UWM Offices of Equity and Diversity Services (EDS).
- Functions.
- To review data provided by the Office of Equity/Diversity Services on faculty recruitment, promotion, and termination annually as it relates to compliance with Affirmative Action.
- Informed by the reviewed data, to create an annual report of appropriate recommendations/actions/policies where relevant.
- To submit and present the annual report to the University Committee, Faculty Senate, and Office of Equity/Diversity Services.
- Informed by the reviewed data, to conduct reviews into various UWM Faculty employment related processes, including hiring, promotion, mentoring, grievance, and retention when appropriate.
Meetings:
- In total, AAFEC met five (5 times) during the 2024-25 academic year (Sept, Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb).
- During the first meeting for 2024-25 academic year, the committee continued to work on the goals set during 2023-24 academic year. It was agreed that the committee would work on two main goals over the academic year:
- Creating an Evaluation Framework rubric
- Creating an AAFEC Annual Report Template
- Committee continued to work on the above goals during Nov, Dec, and January meetings (drafts available upon request from the 2024-25 chair, Monna Arvinen-Barrow (arvinenb@uwm.edu)
- Following President Trump’s revocation of EO11246, and after consulting with the University Legal, the committee had its last meeting in February where they:
- Made modification suggestions to the committee’s name and functions.
- Suggested modifications were approved by the committee (3-0-0; Ghose, Mandell).
- Suggested modifications will be submitted to faculty governance for approval following further guidance from UW-system/UWM on Affirmative Action. (3-0-0; Mandell, Ghose).
