A1.6 Awards and Recognition Committee
The Awards and Recognition Committee (ARC) selects recipients for outstanding teacher recognition awards from candidates nominated by students, faculty, or departments.
- Membership. The committee consists of the following members:
- four elected Faculty members;
- three Faculty members appointed by the University Committee;
- two students appointed annually by the Student Association.
- Functions.
- Subject to administrative policies and guidelines and subject to the provisions of gifts, bequests, or other unbudgeted sources not administered directly by colleges, schools, or departments, recommends or selects candidates for awards or recognition for Faculty members.
- Selects recipients for outstanding teacher recognition awards and service awards from candidates nominated by students, Faculty, or departments.
- Recommends students for appropriate scholarship awards not under the jurisdiction of other Faculty committees or other agencies.
- Maintains liaison with appropriate system-wide committees where these are pertinent to UWM.
- Acts as an information clearing house concerning sources of awards and recognition.
Meetings:
The committee met twice in the fall semester and once in the spring semester to plan for, discuss, and make recommendations for the following faculty awards:
Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award
Regents Teaching Excellence Award
Distinguished University Service Award
Distinguished Public Service Award
Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award
The committee received eight nominations for this award. From these, the committee determined all eight had nomination materials that justified further consideration as finalists. Two committee members met with and observed the teaching of each of these 8 finalists. Following an hour discussion over the finalists merits and accomplishments, one faculty member was recommended to the Chancellor for this award, and the Chancellor accepted the committee’s nomination.
Regents Teaching Excellence Award
For the 2025-2026 academic year the Regents Teaching Excellence Award was suspended, we did not request or review any applications.
Distinguished University Service Award
The committee received two nominations for this award. From these, the committee recommended one faculty member to the Chancellor for this award, and the Chancellor accepted the committee’s nomination.

The committee received two nominations for this award. The committee recommended one faculty member to the Chancellor for this award, and the Chancellor accepted the committee’s nomination.
Matters Referred Forward
At our last meeting the committee discussed two key aspects around the faculty awards moving forward. The first is the need to develop a standard evaluation form for committee members to document teaching observations finalists of the Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award. Given the diversity in course types, student levels, and subjects, there was a need to help evaluate and compare the many qualified nominees the committee receives each year. The second topic that will be discussed more moving forward focuses on the committees concern about the lack of recognition for the teaching efforts and accomplishments by the faculty. The committee reviews and considers many faculty that should be recognized for their excellence in undergraduate teaching, but the committee is limited in awards that can be recommended. Going forward the committee will discuss options for recognizing the finalists of wards that are ultimately not recommended to the Chancellors office as a recommended awardee. Possible solutions include notification of college Deans and Department Chairs when a Faculty member of their college is a finalist, or online recognition portal similar to what was established for academic staff.
