Latine Heritage Month
Latine Heritage Month (LHM) at UWM is coordinated by a team of campus stakeholders offering a variety of programs that recognize and celebrate the history, culture and contributions of people of Latine, Afro-Latine, Chicane, Latin American, Caribbean, Spanish and Indigenous descent in the United States.
National Latinx Heritage Month has been observed from September 15th to October 15th in the U.S. since 1988. It takes place during this time period to honor the independence days of several countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico and Chile, as well as Día de la Raza, a significant cultural celebration observed in Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Honduras, Mexico, Uruguay and Venezuela.
HOLA Archives Podcast Project
The HOLA Archives Podcast Project is a collaboration between the UWM Libraries and the UWM Roberto Hernandez Center and was made possible by a grant from the Wisconsin Humanities Council. The HOLA Archives take a deep dive into the stories of Milwaukee Latino/as who fought to make Milwaukee a more welcoming community. Drawing on oral history collections at the UWM Libraries and the Wisconsin Historical Society, this set of pilot episodes tells the story of the founding of the Spanish Speaking Outreach Institute—now the Roberto Hernandez Center—and the experience of Latina activists in Milwaukee in the late 1960s-early 1970s.
