Language Analysis Laboratory

Objectives

The primary objective of the UW-Milwaukee Language Analysis Laboratory is to improve the long-term outcomes of children experiencing language difficulties. To effectively improve children’s outcomes, clinicians and researchers require sound assessments to assist with a) the accurate identification of a disorder, b) rich description of strengths and weaknesses to assist with treatment planning, and c) efficient and robust monitoring tools to document students’ progress.

Our current research includes:

• Development of clinically feasible general outcome measures for use in screening and progress monitoring
• Assessment of expository and persuasive discourse in secondary and high school students
• Refinement of language sample analysis procedures to more accurately and efficiently document children’s language functioning
• Communication-based functional outcomes across the lifespan
• Assessment of emergent literacy skills in at-risk populations (including children from Head Start programs)

Community Partners

Our research has been supported by people throughout the educational community. At each of these sites, multiple speech-language pathologists have generously donated their time to assist with data collection on several projects.
