TRIO Upward Bound Math & Science (UBMS) is a free, federally funded college prep program for low-income and first-generation high school students (grades 9-12) to boost their skills and interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) fields, offering tutoring, advising, career exposure, college visits, and college readiness help to prepare them for STEM degrees and careers. It runs year-round with after-school support, STEM and college prep workshops, and a mandatory summer program, aiming to make college, especially in STEM, achievable by building confidence and providing essential resources for success.

Program Dates

Upward Bound Math and Science provides participants with academic enrichment, STEM career exploration, personal support, leadership development, and exposure to the college environment. Students participate in the program from the time of acceptance through high school graduation. Participation is required for the six-week pre-college summer program on the UW-Milwaukee campus. Students attend classes according to grade level. 

Academic School Year

  • Attend monthly UBMS program meeting, academic enrichment and STEM workshops and program activities/field trips
  • Attend monthly scheduled meetings with UBMS advisors to discuss students’ academic performance
  • Students attend after-school tutoring at least one – four days per week

6 – Week Summer Program  

  • Students attend classes, STEM workshops, and participate in a research project
  • Engage in Friday career exploration field trips and participate in community building
  • The UBMS 6 – week Summer Program has a residential or commuter option for participants

Eligibility

Students must:

  • Be a U.S. Citizen or a permanent resident
  • Have a household income that meets low-income guidelines established annually by the federal government
  • Be a first-generation college graduate; students whose parent(s) did not graduate from a four-year college or university
  • Be in high school (grades 9-12)
  • Want to go to college after high school graduation
  • Attend a target school or be within the target schools’ service area
    • Target Schools include Bay View High School, Hmong American Peace Academy (HAPA), Rufus King International High School, Pulaski High School, Riverside University High School, South Division High School, Washington High School of Information Technology 

Preferences given to students:

  • In 9th and 10th grade
  • With a strong interest in science, technology, engineering, math, or healthcare
  • Who plan to remain in the program through graduation from high school
  • Who participate in the fall and spring tutoring program twice a week
  • Who participate in and complete the six-week summer program annually
  • Who attend all workshops, college visits, academic and enrichment activities
