Rationale

  • UWM is committed to fostering equitable, transparent, and organized learning environments for all students. A critical component of this commitment is the consistent use of the Learning Management System (LMS) to communicate assignment expectations, instructions, deadlines, and submission requirements.
  • When instructors create LMS Assignments with due dates and point values, students benefit from tools  that help them manage workloads across courses, reduce missed deadlines, and maintain clear visibility into course requirements.

Policy

Use of LMS Assignments

  • Instructors must ensure that all graded assignments, assessments, and activities are created as Assignments within the LMS course site.
  • This requirement also applies when instructors use third-party platforms and courseware (e.g., products by McGraw-Hill, Pearson, Cengage, Wiley); assignments must still be represented in the LMS with equivalent details.

Assignment Requirements

  • Each LMS Assignment must include:
    • A title
    • A description and instructions
    • Submission Type (online, in-class, on paper, third-party platform, etc.)
    • Point values
    • Due dates

Exceptions

  • The following course types are exempt from these LMS assignment requirements: Independent studies (G/UG), directed readings, study abroad, internships, unused lab/discussion sections, and research/theses/dissertation credits involving individualized instruction or one-on-one faculty mentorship.
  • Courses with assignments that require staggered due dates not currently supported by the LMS are exempt from listing a single uniform due date or creating multiple copies of the same assignment. In these cases, instructors must provide students with clear instructions, due dates, and point values.
