Motion

Beginning in Fall 2007, all departmental chairpersons will be required to attend a workshop addressing UWM Policy and Procedure as it relates to departmental governance. This workshop will be conducted by the Secretary of the University and members of the University Committee. Beginning Fall 2008 only new departmental chairs will be required to attend this workshop.

Rationale

At present, the governance bodies do not provide assistance to departmental chairs regarding the interpretation and application of UWM Policies and Procedures as they apply to the governance of academic departments. Given the importance of adherence to policies and procedures on such matters as open meetings, tenure and promotion procedures, faculty complaints and grievances, and other personnel issues it would be useful to provide departmental chairs an opportunity to become more familiar with UWM Policies and Procedures so they more fully exercise their duties.
