Motion

The UWM University Committee moves that the UWM Faculty Senate support the development of a policy that would maintain the UWM Directory hard copy and electronic listings for both emeriti and retired faculty members. Further, that the University Committee work with the Provost and Chief Information Officer to develop such a policy to be implemented in time to ensure implementation for the 2004/2005 editions of the UWM Directory. Finally, that the policy be provided to the UWM Faculty Senate for information and included in the UWM Selected Academic and Administrative Policies once finalized.

Rationale

The University Committee recieved from the UWM Retired Faculty Association (RFA), through its President Professor Emerita Carol Baumann, the following motion:

The UWM Retired Faculty Association requests the UWM University Committee to establish a policy whereby the names of professors emeriti shall not be removed from their department’s listing in the UWM Staff Directory, except in cases of demise or at the request of the said professors emeriti.

Many of our retired (and emeriti) faculty sustain an on-going professional commitment to the UWM campus community. As such, and given their desire to maintain a presence in our UWM Directories, the University Committee fully supports their request and recommends that the Faculty Senate add their support. Currently, retired/emeriti faculty are maintained for one year, post-severance, in the directories. They are then deleted. This is a database artifact, given the current process in place for getting all faculty/staff directory information. Specifically, the personnel database is used to download directory information, deleting all severed faculty one year after termination. To implement a policy to include our former colleagues post-termination will require a manual input approach, which could be electronically streamlined to ensure timely loading in of former colleague’s data.
