Multidisciplinary Research Series: Managing Research Data for “Mapping Racism and Resistance”

November 17, 2023 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm

Anne Bonds (Geography) and Derek Handley (English) on managing research data for Mapping Racism and Resistance.

The Mapping Racism and Resistance project examines the critical role of racial covenants as they worked together with other discriminatory housing practices in restricting Black access to housing and producing racial segregation in Milwaukee County. The project generates multiple data types that require careful management. From crowdsourcing the identification of racial language in thousands of digitized covenants, to mapping covenanted neighborhoods, the project relies on data to clearly document and visualize the effect of racist real estate covenants in Milwaukee County. Join us to discuss how we generate this data and how managing it carefully is key to the outcomes of our research.

The Northwestern Mutual Data Science Institute, in collaboration with the UWM Libraries, is host.
