The Libraries recently welcomed three new permanent staff to UWM.
Christopher Doll has been appointed library associate director for the Collection and Resource Management division. CRM works in partnership with librarians and faculty liaisons to select, acquire, describe, preserve, and provide access to physical and electronic resources, in support of teaching, learning, and research at UWM.
Before arriving at the UWM Libraries, Chris was library director and a faculty member at the University of Dubuque (IA). He also served as library director at Divine Word College (IA), and on the faculty of the foreign language departments at Hongik University and ShinHeung College, both in South Korea.
Chris holds an MLIS from UWM, an MA in Korean Studies from Yonsei University Graduate School of International Studies (South Korea), and a BA in English from Saint John’s University (MN).
Chris says that he is already inspired by the staff who work in CRM and in the library as a whole: “There is so much passion and knowledge under the UWM Libraries umbrella and it’s exciting to be a part of it.” He is looking forward to working with people across campus “to build an accessible collection that we can be proud of and reflects UWM’s diversity and research needs.”
Outside of work, Chris is a recent devotee of disc golf who can’t wait to play Milwaukee’s courses throughout the four seasons (“If anyone wants to play, shoot me an email,” he says) and a longtime ultramarathon trail runner. “I lived in Korea for 12 years and my wife is Korean, so I am also looking forward to being involved in the Milwaukee Korean community and helping educate people about Korean culture.”
Claire Dinkelman is the new student success librarian at the Golda Meir Library. A member of User Services, Claire’s primary focus is on the instruction and retention of first-year students.
Previously, Claire was health sciences librarian at Marquette University. She also worked as an administrative coordinator in Marquette’s Educational Opportunity Program and as an intern in the UWM Archives. She received her undergraduate degree from Marquette in history and anthropology and her MLIS from UWM.
Claire is excited about UWM Libraries’ relationship with English 102 (college writing and research) at UWM. “Most universities work on a one-shot library instruction model,” she explains, “and here the English 102 curriculum is shaped around the Association of College & Research Libraries’ framework and its strong information literacy component–be still my beating heart!”
Also, she is thrilled to work with UWM Libraries staff: “I knew I was going to learn a lot and develop as a librarian,” she says. “When researching this position, I came across the phrase ‘radically welcoming’ in the University and Libraries’ vision statements. On my monitor, I have a post-it note with those words as a daily reminder.”
Claire’s interests include movies (especially at the Oriental Theater), podcasts, and audiobooks, and she enjoys attending Brewers games with her husband, hanging out with her cat, and “wine night” with her friends.
Julia Lee is the new librarian at the UWM at Washington County Library. As librarian, she provides a wide range of services including reference, instruction, and research consultation.
Julia earned her MLIS from UWM in 2016. In 2017, she moved back to Wisconsin after working in Minnesota public libraries for six years to take the Youth Services Manager position at Manitowoc Public Library, a position she held until this spring.
In addition to her MLIS, Julia holds a BSE in English education with a minor in theatre education from UW-Whitewater. She is an active member of the Wisconsin Library Association (WLA): she is the 2022 Chair of the Wisconsin Children’s Book Award Committee and a member of the WLA Intellectual Freedom SIG. She is looking forward to getting involved in Wisconsin Association of Academic Librarians.
“I am excited to build relationships with students and faculty, help support the academic success of our students, and create a real sense of community at the Washington County library,” she says. “I am also looking forward to working with and learning from so many incredible fellow librarians in UWM Libraries!”
When not at the library, Julia loves being active, playing board games, gardening, cooking, reading, spending time in nature, and going on adventures with her husband.
