UWM Libraries Coronavirus Update (March 19, 2020)

ALL UWM LIBRARIES BUILDINGS CLOSE

In response to the rapidly evolving public health emergency in southeastern Wisconsin, the UWM Libraries have closed until further notice our three physical locations–UWM Golda Meir Library, UWM at Washington County Library, and UWM at Waukesha Library–effective Thursday, March 19, 2020 at 5 p.m.

Additionally, the entire UWM campuses at Washington County and Waukesha closed on Friday, March 20, at 5 p.m.

Access to online databases, articles, and e-books continues uninterrupted.

Letter from the Director of Libraries, March 19, 2020

OTHER UPDATES

Our in-state library delivery service is suspended through April 6. Materials are not being transferred between UW institutions (e.g., between UW Madison and UW Milwaukee) or between campuses at the same institution (e.g., between UW Milwaukee and UWM at Washington County). The Wisconsin Area Research Network lending service is also suspended.

ILL borrowing from other libraries may take longer than normal or may be impossible altogether. Delivery of PDFs of articles from journals and book chapters continues as usual. In lieu of requesting entire books, we advise that users locate a table of contents (most are on Amazon or Google Books) and submit an ILLiad request for the desired chapter. We are working with our library colleagues around the world to extend the loan periods of books and other materials already borrowed through ILL. Users may retain those items for the time being.

Due dates for most UWM Libraries’ materials have been extended to mid-May. This includes items from all UWM Libraries: the Golda Meir Library, UWM at Washington County Library and UWM at Waukesha County Library.

  • If an item is due and you do not want to come to campus to return it (due to illness or other circumstances), please keep it until you are able to safely return it. If you are charged late/lost item fees, we can remove them upon the item’s return. We understand that this is a difficult time, and special considerations will be made. Communication via email (libcirc@uwm.edu) is the fastest method to communicate with a Circulation Supervisor.
  • Please do not return equipment (laptops, cameras, headphones, etc.) via the book returns.
  • Items returned via the book return may remain on your account for some period of time, but fines will not be assessed.

The Libraries are moving our support for UWM course instruction online, as feasible. Faculty are encouraged to use this guide to include library resources in their online instruction.

Programs and events are suspended through May 31 at all campus libraries.

TAKE CARE

During this time, we encourage our users to make use of the UWM Libraries’ online collections and services through our home page. You may get help online 24/7 through our Ask a Librarian service.

Additionally, we encourage all users and staff to review and follow the guidance and information provided by the CDC to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus.

We continue to the monitor the situation and will make adjustments as needed by changing events. Updates to library operations will be posted on our home page and social media channels. We appreciate everyone’s consideration and understanding as we navigate this unprecedented situation.
