Ewa Barczyk, Emerita Director of the UWM Libraries and Associate Provost, has been named a 2018 Ernest Spaights Plaza Honoree, in acknowledgement of her significant, enduring and campus-wide contributions to the growth and development of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Barczyk, who guided the Libraries from 2003 to 2016, was recognized by Chancellor Mark Mone at the Annual Fall Awards Ceremony on October 17 in the UWM Union.

The Chancellor noted Barczyk’s most important achievements, which included her leadership of the fundraising for, planning, and construction of the Daniel M. Soref Learning Commons (2009).

During her tenure, she also directed the expansion of staff development to foster diversity and user-focused provision of services, and presided over the rapid digitization of scholarly resources, as well as the creation of the UWM Digital Humanities Lab, located in the Golda Meir Library and headed by library staff.

The Ernest Spaights Plaza is named in honor of the late Professor Ernest Spaights. Barczyk’s name will be added to a plaque located on the plaza.
