Funded by SOIS and the UWM Libraries, the internship honors the memory of Tyler Smith, a SOIS graduate and an academic librarian in User Services, who passed away suddenly in 2016.

Huff has worked in the Libraries’ User Services division as the Learning Commons intern since September 2016, and was chosen for the Smith Internship in acknowledgement of her talent and contributions in the areas of leadership, communication, collaboration and professional curiosity.

“I am pleased that we are able to honor the memory of our colleague and friend through this named internship,” says Kate Ganski, Assistant Director of Libraries for User Services. “Aubrey embodies qualities that we all appreciated in Tyler, such as care and support for peers and a keen interest in scholarly research.”

Huff was recognized for her award at a reception in the library on February 23. Attendees included Smith’s widow, Amy Chavie; SOIS Dean Tomas Lipinski; and Libraries Director Michael Doylen.

Huff, who graduates in May with her MLIS, credits her education and employment at UWM with solidifying her career goals.

“As a professional,” she says, “I will cultivate passion for knowledge, promote universal access to information, and most importantly support information literacy, as an information literate public is the cornerstone to democracy.”
