The Milwaukee Normal School began publishing the Echo yearbook in 1896, and continued publication of the yearbook after its transformation into the Milwaukee State Teachers College in 1927. The yearbook includes student photographs, information about the faculty and governing board, academic departments and disciplines, curriculum, student organizations, and athletics. The student staff also contributed written pieces on various subjects, such as the city of Milwaukee, class histories, poetry, and sketches. It ceased publication in 1941.

The digital collection includes the yearbooks for most years that the Milwaukee Normal School/Milwaukee State Teachers College was in operation. The title “The Echo” was also used for a number of other publications created by the college, including a monthly in 1915, a weekly beginning in 1919, and a summer edition in 1946, which are not included here.
