With support from CLACS, UWM PhD candidate Kimathi Muthee recently presented his research at the 25th Annual Africa Conference 2026, which took place in April at The University of Texas at Austin. He presented the paper “Migration, Multilingualism, and the Making of Transcultural Identity in Marlon James and Edwidge Danticat.”
Muthee, who is completing a doctorate in English literature and cultural theory, shared that the opportunity allowed him to receive crucial feedback on a key component of his dissertation research:
“As a doctoral candidate researching African and African diasporic literatures, opportunities to share my work in scholarly spaces are invaluable to my professional development. Sharing my work on migration, multilingualism, and transcultural identity with an international community of scholars was both affirming and transformative. Through feedback and dialogue, the experience significantly strengthened my dissertation project and expanded my professional network at a pivotal moment in my academic journey. CLACS’s investment in my work opened critical doors as I move toward a career in the field, and I am deeply honored to have received this support.”
