Sociology Graduate Student Presents Research on Immigrant Students in Higher Education

CLACS was delighted to support Rivka Comrov (UWM, Sociology) in her conference presentation last semester at the Wisconsin Sociological Association. Comrov, an MS student, traveled to University of Wisconsin-Stout in November 2025 to present research she conducted with her advisor, Professor Dante Salto (UWM, higher education policy).

Comrov’s presentation, entitled “Implementing DACA: Discretion and Policy in Higher Education During a Time of Crisis,” discussed how higher education institutions, as public service providers, navigate evolving policies affecting Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients.

She shared this reflection on her conference experience:

“With gratitude to the Center for Caribbean and Latin American Studies, I was able to attend a sociological research conference and present my research mentor, Dr. Salto, and I’s research on how higher-education administrators support immigrant students during times of crisis – in reference to the pandemic and the ever-evolving political landscape. Being among distinguished scholars was both energizing and affirming, as many expressed strong interest in the implications of our work. Several professors shared that the findings could help shape new institutional practices for immigrant and Hispanic student communities at their own campuses. Contributing to these conversations made me feel that my research could help inspire broader academic engagement and policy development. This opportunity would not have been possible without the Center’s support, which helped alleviate the financial strain of attending as a full-time graduate student.”

Congratulations to Rivka Comrov on this research!
