What is Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)?
At UWM, safeguarding your digital identity is a top priority. Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) adds an essential layer of protection to your account by requiring two forms of verification: something you know (your password) and something you have (like your smartphone or device). This combination helps ensure that only you can access your account—even if your password is compromised.
MFA Examples
You may already be using MFA without realizing it. Here are a few familiar scenarios:
- Using an ATM: You need both your bank card and your PIN.
- Paying at the pump: You swipe your credit card and enter your ZIP code.
- Online banking: You log in and receive a security code via text message.
These extra steps help confirm your identity and keep your information secure.
New to MFA
If you’re a currently enrolled student, you’ll be prompted to enroll in MFA the next time you log into a UWM online application such as Microsoft 365, PAWS, or Canvas.
