Cybersecurity Awareness Month

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, dedicated to increased awareness of online safety and digital security. To stay safe online, it is important to be familiar with different types of online threats, how to keep your information protected, and how to keep UWM cyber secure. Information on all cybersecurity topics can be found on the cybersecurity webpage.

Staying Safe Online

  • Avoid phishing scams. A phishing email tries to trick you into clicking a link or sharing personal information by using urgent language or pretending to be from someone you know. If an email has an unexpected request or seems suspicious, do not click on anything or respond. Report the email to abuse@uwm.edu. UWM’s Information Security Team will review the email for you.
  • Use a phrase instead of a word for passwords. Use a longer phrase implementing symbols, numbers, and a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters to make a strong, complex password.
  • Antivirus software is important. Install, update, and regularly run antivirus software on personal devices. Learn more on the data security webpage.
