Changes coming to Multi-Factor Authentication

In early 2027, Microsoft will introduce changes to the sign-in process for UWM users to access online services such as Microsoft 365, PAWS and Canvas.

Retirement of SMS/Voice

On Feb. 1, 2027, Microsoft will retire the SMS (text) and voice (call) options for multi-factor authentication. Details of this retirement are still being finalized and will be shared before the deadline. As part of this change, Microsoft will also retire account verification security questions, and your primary MFA method or alternative methods will be used instead.

New MFA Method Available: Passkey

Passkeys are now available as an MFA authentication method for UWM users. Passkeys allow you to verify your identity using your device’s built-in security, such as biometrics (Face ID and Touch ID), Google Password Manager or your device’s PIN. To set up a passkey as an MFA method, follow the directions in the Passkey KnowledgeBase article.

Review and Remove Authentication Methods

To ensure you are using one of the approved methods and do not experience any prompts for underused or retiring methods, please review and update your MFA setup. For new accounts and users who haven’t registered for SMS or voice, those will no longer be authentication options starting Nov. 5.

If you need assistance finding the right MFA method for your device or if you have questions, contact the UWM Help Desk.
