How to Handle a Phishing Email

If you receive an email that makes you pause or confuses you, do not click on anything or reply to the message. Use the information below to help guide you in staying safe online. To learn more about phishing and other cybersecurity topics visit our webpage: uwm.edu/cybersecurity.

Signs of a Phishing Email

  • An unknown sender.
  • Known sender, odd email address (Ex: the name of someone from UWM, but it is not a UWM email address).
  • Urgent language, asking you to do an action quickly.
  • Request for personal information, MFA verification code, or some form of payment.
  • A link or attachment that you were not expecting.
  • Spelling/grammar errors, does not appear to have the correct format or branding.

What to Do

  • Do not reply or open any links/attachments.
  • Report the email to abuse@uwm.edu. UWM’s Information Security Team will review the email for you and confirm if it is a scam.
  • If you believe you have clicked on or responded to a phishing message, contact the UWM Help Desk.
