The Helen Bader Institute (HBI) for Nonprofit Management at the UW-Milwaukee is excited to announce its 2nd Annual Summer Film Series , which seeks to take a look into all aspects of the world social sector and our place in this ever-evolving landscape. Mark your calendars – you won’t want to miss these films and the important discussions that follow.

This year we tackle topics that appear frequently in conversations about Milwaukee …food insecurity, gang violence, and urban redevelopment. Join us as we look into how other communities have addressed these issues and consider how we might address these same concerns that hit so close to home.

A PLACE AT THE TABLE – June 10, 2019

• A Place at the Table shows us how hunger poses serious economic, social and cultural implications for our nation, and that it could be solved once and for all, if the American public decides — as they have in the past — that making healthy food available and affordable is in the best interest of us all.

ROMEO IS BLEEDING – July 10, 2019

• From Executive Producer Russell Simmons and Director Jason Zeldes, comes an award-winning documentary following Donté Clark, a young poet transcending the violence in his hometown by writing about his experiences. Growing up in Richmond, CA, a city haunted by a fatal turf war, Donté and the like-minded youth of the city mount an urban adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, with the hope of starting a dialogue about violence in the city.

THIRD WARD TX – August 5, 2019

• Houston, TX– A row of born-again shotgun houses is the unlikely home of cutting-edge art and visionary thinking about inner-city renewal. THIRD WARD TX introduces artists and neighbors of Project Row Houses who are breathing new life into their historically black community. Success attracts new real estate speculation as Project Row Houses races to create its own development plans that honor the history and culture of Houston's Third Ward and strengthen community ties.

All screenings will take place at 7pm in the UWM Student Union Fireside Lounge. Admission is free of charge – but pre-registration is requested. Parking is available.
