Concurrent Appointments

If you have two or more assistantship appointments that add up to 33% total, you are not eligible to receive health insurance benefits OR tuition remission. One of your appointments alone must be at least 33% to receive health insurance/tuition remission. (For example, if you have a TA appointment of 33% and an RA appointment of 20%, you will be eligible for health insurance benefits and tuition remission, because one of these appointments is 33%. In contrast, while a TA appointment of 25% and an RA appointment of 17% add to 42% total, you will not receive health insurance benefits even though the total is over 33%, because in this example, neither appointment on its own is 33%)

Combinations of appointments that add up to more than 50 percent during the fall and spring semester are not permitted for those on F-1 visas; combinations of appointments for all others are restricted to 75 percent during the fall and spring semesters.

In all cases, the total appointment percentage should reflect a balance between time devoted to academics and time devoted to the appointments. The academic success of the student should be the foremost determinant. Factors to consider in offering concurrent appointments that exceed 50 percent total time are the student’s time management skills, grade point average, and progress toward degree.
