Career Workshop and Research Event

April 21, 2017 @ 8:15 am - 4:30 pm

The Department of Geosciences will host a combined ‘Career Workshop and Research’ event for our students and alumni on April 21st, 2017.  Every Spring, the Department of Geosciences hosts a student symposium to highlight the exciting research conducted by our students, this year we have combined this event with a career workshop for our students.  This one-day event, the first of its kind hosted by the Department, was developed in response to student demand for career information, and was made possible by our connection to our dedicated alumni, several of whom will serve as presenters for the career workshop.  This event will include a morning dedicated to our students featuring presentations by professional geoscientists, a lunch for our students, alumni and guests, and an afternoon symposium dedicated to sharing student research within our department, and for our alumni and guests.

Presenters in the morning workshop will highlight geoscience careers in both private and public sector, in disciplines that include hydrogeology, environmental consulting, mineral exploration, oil exploration, and regulatory enforcement.  The presenters include an alumni presenter from an environmental engineering firm that supports mineral exploration, two alumni presenters from a local environmental consulting firm, one alumni presenter actively involved in executing oil exploration in the Gulf of Mexico, and two representatives from the Southeast Regional office of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.  The speakers for the morning workshop include:

  • Dan Wiitala, P. G., VP/CFO/Cofounder, North Jackson Company, Marquette, MI
  • John Osborne & Jim Drought, Hydrogeologists/Office Managers, GZA GeoEnvironmental, Waukesha/Milwaukee, WI
  • Lindsey Henry, Applied Geologist – Sedimentology and Stratigraphy, Thunder Horse asset, Gulf of Mexico, BP, Houston, TX
  • Pam Mylotta & Michelle Norman, Remediation and Redevelopment Program, Southeast Region, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources

The afternoon student symposium will feature oral presentations from 1:30-3:30, followed by a poster session in the Thomas Greene Geological Gallery at 3:30 pm.   The Department annually welcomes all department staff, faculty and students, as well as any interested guests and alumni to this exciting event that focuses on the various research disciplines of our graduate and undergraduate student researchers.   All sessions of this one-day event will occur in Lapham Hall, so alumni and guests can also visit our facilities and re-connect with our faculty, staff and students.  If alumni and guests would like to join us for lunch on that day prior to the symposium, we ask that they kindly RSVP to Rob Graziano at graziano@uwm.edu, or Ph 414-229-3648.
