In 1759, toiling under the brutal plantocracy on the colonial Isle de France (Mauritius), Massamba’s daughter Mati rebels and flees Larcenet’s sugar plantation where they are enslaved to join a community of maroons. When the slave hunter Mme la Victoire is hired to track her down, her father must run too, to shield them from the subsequent inhumane punishment.
