Teaching Interests

Ryan's courses help students explore and understand the complexities of today's communication environment. Students grapple with how to interpret information in fractured media ecologies when the validity of messages is often unclear and new forms of ethos are constantly introduced.

Research Interests

Ryan researches how affects shape folks' political beliefs. He's interested in ways unconscious political feelings allow us to hold contradictory beliefs or claims while fetishizing conflicts in others’ positions. His research is deeply informed by contemporary critical and rhetorical theories that help him explore the rapidly changing rhetorical ecologies through which ideas emerge.

In line with that, he also develops research-based curriculums that address related challenges like AI's impact on reading and writing and the need for deep, integrated reading instruction in today's classrooms and first-year writing programs.
