The Training & Dispute Resolution Specialist works to advance a campus culture in which human diversity is valued, dialogue across difference is encouraged, and conflicts are navigated in a healthy and constructive fashion. Trainings and resources are provided to individuals or units seeking to proactively build their capacity in conflict transformation or civil dialogue. Those currently experiencing conflict may request support in dispute resolution. When conflicts occur, we recommend reaching out as early as possible; our goal is to support conflict resolution before it escalates to situations that may warrant a complaint to the Office of Equity/Diversity Services (EDS).

Conflict Transformation

Conflict transformation is a theory and practice that highlights how conflict can be a potential catalyst for learning and growth. This approach aims to equip people with the preparation, confidence, and skills needed to engage conflict constructively. Not only does this lead to smoother resolutions when episodes of conflict do arise, but it also fosters a more inclusive climate. A conflict transformation mindset can help community members better dialogue across differences, discover mutual interests, and work together for positive change.

In Spring 2024, the Division of DEI began offering Conflict Transformation Circles for UWM faculty and staff with supervisory or instructional roles. Each circle is a series of 3 sessions on the following topics:

  • Conflict styles
  • Responsive strategies: Engaging conflict in the moment
  • Proactive strategies: Preparing for conflict

Contact us if you are interested in a conflict transformation presentation or workshop tailored to your department, unit, or program. Please reach out with as much advance notice as possible; there may be a waiting list for workshops if demand is high.

We can also provide brief videos and digital handouts that overview conflict transformation principles and recommended practices.

Dispute Resolution

The Training & Dispute Resolution Specialist offers the following informal conflict resolution services to supplement the more formal complaint and investigative processes overseen by Equity/Diversity Services. This work is also intended to complement support services provided by the Dean of Students Office.

Individual Consultations

If you are experiencing a conflict (especially one related to diversity, equity, or inclusion concerns), you may request a virtual or in-person meeting with the Training & Dispute Resolution Specialist. This consultation provides a secure space for you to process emotions; analyze the conflict and power dynamics; and gain clarity about your goals and possible next steps.

Coaching in Conflict Communication

If you want to handle the conflict yourself by talking directly with the other person(s) involved, coaching can help you plan and practice effective communication strategies.

Informal Mediation/Facilitated Conversation

Sometimes a dispute may be better resolved with the assistance of a multi-partial mediator to facilitate one or more conversations among those involved in the conflict. The Training & Dispute Resolution Specialist is available to serve in this way when the right conditions exist for such facilitated conversations.

Note that these conversations require some preparation, including that the mediator first meet individually with anyone who will participate. Her role is not to determine the truth of what has occurred, nor can she take sides, offer legal advice, or advocate for either party. Rather, the mediator will guide the conversation in an effort to help participants hear each other’s perspectives and work together to develop a mutually satisfactory resolution.
