Chinese 101 – First Semester Chinese (5 units, U)

An introduction to Chinese language, Chinese 101 covers the basics of both spoken and written standard Mandarin Chinese. During the course, students will learn the Mandarin pronunciation and tonal system as well as information about the Chinese character system. Topics covered include greetings, families, dates and times, hobbies, visiting friends, making phone calls, and appointments.

Chinese 102 – Second Semester Chinese (5 units, U)

Chinese 102 is a continuation of Chinese 101 and focuses on solidifying and improving on previously learned language skills with special emphasis on expanding and correcting tonal range and understanding the systematic nature of Chinese characters. Topics covered include studying Chinese, school life, shopping, transportation, weather, dining, and asking directions.
