Clinical Education

The program includes rigorous classroom teaching and hands-on clinical experience in the performance of sonographic examinations. You will adhere to a weekly schedule that includes 2 days of classes and 3 to 4, 8-hour days of clinical training (depending on the semester). Some clinical rotations may be scheduled during evening and weekend hours. You will never be required to exceed 40 hours per week.

The program employs a “competency-based” approach to the clinical education of sonography. You must demonstrate skills and abilities that meet expectations outlined in the program objectives before you are eligible for graduation.

The program objectives are designed to ensure that you have the ability to perform sonographic examinations at competent levels by the end of your clinical training. You must demonstrate knowledge of current scanning techniques in the field of medical sonography and ultrasound equipment manipulation before entering careers in the profession.

Your clinical performance will be evaluated using criteria that incorporates data provided by the registered sonographers and technologists at the clinical sites and reviewed by the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program Director and appropriate program staff.
