Doing the Work, not just Reading about It: Building Courses Around Skills Students Can Use

How can we design learning experiences that help students connect what they learn in our courses to what they may be asked to do beyond the classroom?

In our final Active Teaching Lab of the semester, Dianne Crowley will share how she has redesigned her courses around hands-on, applied learning. Rather than building her event-planning course primarily around readings, Dianne challenged students to design and produce real events. Students selected venues, developed promotions, raised funds, and managed the event themselves. Over six years, these student-created events raised more than $50,000 for Milwaukee non-profit organizations while giving students practical experience they could add to their résumés and carry into their careers. 

In addition, we’ll explore how coursework built around relevant, transferable skills can demonstrate to students the value of what we are teaching, prepare them for changing professional expectations, and help students make stronger connections between college and life beyond the classroom.

This session will be held in-person and virtually via Zoom. Registration is not required but helps us prepare.
