Shawn Smith

Shawn Smith has served youth, adults and families as a direct service provider, manager and administrator since 1995. Smith is a practitioner and coach of mindfulness practices, a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) and a MINT certified trainer. He has trained thousands of professionals in motivational interviewing since 2009, including those serving in education, health care, behavioral health, workforce development, education and the criminal justice system.

Shawn has served on several state and local committees dedicated to advancing trauma-informed care principles, including the state of Wisconsin's trauma-informed care advisory committee and trauma-informed care tool-kit workgroup. He was a core team member for an initiative focused on creating trauma-informed awareness in Milwaukee’s Harambee community and has served on the research and evaluation team of the Medical College of Wisconsin’s violence prevention initiative.

He is an early adopter of cultural humility, motivational interviewing, trauma-informed care, and reflective supervision. Shawn initiated the first cultural humility training of facilitators in Wisconsin with the originator of cultural humility, Dr. Melanie Tervalon.
