Michael Hauer's primary mission was to prepare students for service in the community through intellectual pursuits which focused on the mind/body connection in Sport and Recreation courses and professional development courses.

Beginning with a handful of credit courses and no professional development courses, approximately 800 credit sections and 90 professional development programs were offered in his unit from 1983 to 2009, serving about 7,000 students. During this time, Hauer served under nine deans and acting deans, worked with about three dozen faculty and staff, and was an advisor to multiple student services staff.
