A college education can do more than improve your career and earnings. It can help you to help others! Solving Social Problems is a course that will provide you with an analytic toolkit you can use to help your communities, employing theories from the field of Sociology. You will learn to identify social problems, to analyze why they take place, and to strategize effective ways to resolve the issues you’ve identified. We will examine concerns facing social institutions such as the family, schools, media, and our healthcare system. We’ll look at inequalities based upon characteristics including gender, age, disability, race/ethnicity, and sexuality. We will consider issues like crime and addiction. And we’ll address global problems like war and climate change. Our aim will be to learn why these issues arise, and to use that information to empower ourselves to help solve the social problems we encounter.
