Have you ever wondered how the work you do at your company to contribute to it’s success is reflected in the company records? Is it in the hours you work, the sales you generate or the changes you make to your department?

Corporations are made up of many varying functions that contribute to the overall success of the company including marketing (sales), legal, engineering, accounting, human resources, research, production and many others.  All of these functions have one thing in common, a numerical representation of the missions and performance of the departments within the company must be summarized to let investors and creditors know how the corporation is performing to assure capital expansion.  This numerical representation could be sales, labor costs, and many other functions within the company.  Financial Accounting is the one function in a business that summarizes the missions and performance of all departments in a combined numerical representation of a company, financial statements, which reflects the overall company success.

In this class you will be introduced to the types of transactions or events which represent the individual departments on the financial statements, the standards for recording those transactions or events, and the accounting business cycle from the initiation of a sale or expense to the final financial statement.  This introductory knowledge will aid in your overall understanding of the financial operations of the company you work for and contribute to better decision-making in your work environment no matter what field you have chosen!
