M³ summer programs support students transitioning to MATC and UWM

All of us remember the challenge of a new experience. Whether it was being the new kid in a classroom, trying a new sport, or experiencing a new setting, we faced the challenge of leaving something familiar for something unfamiliar. To smooth the way for MPS graduates heading to MATC or UWM, both institutions are offering summer programs to support the transition from high school to college.

All three M3 institutions — MPS, MATC, and UWM — are working together to ensure that every student’s transition from high school to college is seamless. To meet the goal of helping students transition successfully, M3 initiated new supports for the Class of 2021. These efforts are part of an overall “start smart” approach for students.

Summer Send-off

MPS provides extensive supports for students following their high school graduation. Students can access information through their high school or any of the MPS College and Career Centers open this summer. For more information, students can visit the centers at Hamilton High School, South Division High School, Riverside University High School, or Washington High School of Information Technology. Locations and hours are available on the MPS College and Career Center web page. The district is also supporting the following efforts.

  • Technology Support: Students in the Class of 2021 can receive internet hotspots and Chromebook support through August 2021.
  • Laptop Distribution: MPS has awarded 75 MacBook laptops donated by the Democratic National Convention to graduating MPS seniors.
  • Senior Send-Off, June 9-11: College-bound seniors were encouraged to attend drive-by giveaways that included distribution of gift cards and college supplies.
  • College Enrollment Emergency Grants:  With support from the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation and the MPS Foundation, students can receive up to $250 to assist with college expenses.

For questions about any of these opportunities, please contact Ericca Pollack, MPS College Access Coordinator, at pollacel@milwaukee.k12.wi.us.

Summer Programs

Throughout the summer, MPS graduates attending MATC or UWM can receive:

  • An on-campus experience, in addition to virtual support, that allows students to explore the campus before beginning in-person classes in the fall.
  • Technology support to avoid unpleasant surprises with classroom and support systems. This summer experience is designed to remove challenges before classes start.
  • A “decoded” college course so students understand what is expected and where to find support.
  • Increased scholarships to reduce the stress of college expenses.
  • Opportunities to meet new students, creating an early start to finding new friends.
  • Opportunities to earn college credits, helping build confidence. Students have a chance to begin the fall semester with up to three college credits along with demonstrated success in college.

Welcome Events

Prior to the fall semester, MPS graduates are encouraged to attend welcome events exclusively for MPS students scheduled at MATC and UWM. Invitations will be sent to each student – don’t miss it!

The M3 Smart Start components throughout summer 2021 provide the bridge for MPS graduates to successfully begin their college career at MATC or UWM in fall.
